The period 1929 – 1939, began by Prime Minister Ramsey MacDonald leading the Labour Party - the first labour PM. It was a time which saw the development of an outer London northwest suburb, later poetically known as Metroland. An economic crisis, in 1931, lead to the formation of a National Government, headed by Stanley Baldwin. At the following election - four years later, Baldwin continued leading the National Government. Neville Chamberlain took over the reigns, when elected prime minister in 1937… He was replaced three years later, by Winston Churchill. Essentially, these were all Conservative administrations following liberal policies, coping with the problems of labour. This is a study of life in an outer, northwest London, garden suburb, during the inter-war years. It was a place that had pride in its design, amenities, and convenient transportation serving London. There was no unemployment very little poverty and even less serious crime.
